BASIC EXPRESSION :)(Expressing Favor)
①GIVING & RECEIVING SOMETHING
Meri- wa
Rina ni hana wo agemashita.
Mary gave a flower to Rina.
pattern: (giver)wa (receiver )ni (something)
wo agemasu.
Rina wa
Mary ni hana wo moraimashita.
Rina received a flower from Mary.
pattern: (receiver) wa (giver) ni (something)
wo moraimasu.
note: you can also use "kara" instead of "ni"
Rina
wa Mary kara hana wo moraimashita.
Rina received a flower from Mary.
Mary ga hana wo
kuremashita. (giver)が____________.
Mary gave me a flower. ("me" is the receiver)
(Watashi no)Tomodachi ga imouto ni
chokore-to wo kuremashita.
My friend gave my sister some chocolate.
pattern: (giver) ga (receiver) ni (something)
wo kuremashita.
②TELLING THAT THE FAVOR IS GIVEN/
RECEIVED.
~te agemasu.
(Watashi wa)Imouto ni hon wo yonde
agemashita.
I read a book to my sister.
~te moraimasu.
(Watashi wa)Chichi ni atarashii kuruma wo

I had my father buy a new car for me.
~te kuremasu.
Ani ga eigo
wo oshiete kuremashita.
My brother taught me English.
Important: One thing you must be careful of
using the expression(~te agemasu)
~てあげます is that you should avoid using
it when you are talking
to someone other than your family and close
friend. For example,
Sensei,
watashi ga sono hon wo motte
agemasu. <<< is inappropriate because you
emphasized that you were giving a favor to
your teacher and as a result
you made them feel uncomfortable about it.
In this case, you should say
"お持ちしましょうか (omochimashou ka)" is
more suitable.
